When you are in a state of relaxation, endorphins are released. These are two hundred times more potent than morphine at blocking sensations of pain. When endorphins are flowing within your body, birth becomes more comfortable, often even pain-free, for both you and your baby.
When you are allowing your body to open, (rather than fighting against it) your uterine muscles have lots of space to work, as they are perfectly designed, to rhythmically move your baby down and out to crowning and birth.
Being tense and in fear causes your birthing muscles to pull against each other, making birth a lot more painful and slowing the process down. This often leads to medical intervention to move things along.
While in utero, your baby is preparing for life in the outside world. In fact, some neuroscientists believe that 50% of your baby's personality is being developed before they are born. When you feel relaxed and positive about your upcoming birth, your baby will be too. You are giving them the message that the world is a safe and happy place. This allows them to ease into life happier and more calm, with nothing to fear.
When you experience the strength of your body opening and you allow yourself to go with it in trust, you will receive your baby into your arms with excitement, and you can say - "I did it!" There is no other feeling quite like it. It's a moment you will cherish forever.

When a woman is holding onto fear during birth, her body gets the message "it's not safe to birth the baby". This causes her body to constrict, holding her baby in. The uterine muscles begin to strongly pull against each other. Stress hormones such as adrenaline, alert her to the pain, suppress her digestive system and prevent her from resting.
Over time she becomes exhausted and can't cope with the pain anymore.
When you take the steps to release fear and are well prepared with specific techniques that help you to work with your body - not against it - your mind and body begin to work in harmony.
Your birthing muscles get sent the message that "it's safe to birth your baby", so they rhythmically open without restriction, and your relaxation hormones, endorphins and oxytocin help to move your birth along faster, and with greater ease.
